Leesburg Dental Implants
At Cardinal Park Family Dental Care, we offer our patients many restorative dentistry options, including dental implants. A missing tooth can cause you more than just a lack of confidence, it can affect your dental health. After a tooth is extracted, bone mass begins to disappear from the jaw. As a result, your face will show signs of early aging and create a droopy appearance. Without a restoration in place, adjacent teeth will slowly start moving into the gap, creating crooked teeth. The exposed gum is more prone to developing periodontal diseases as a result.
The most obvious solution is to find a restoration. With dental implants, a secure screw “post” is surgically implanted in your jaw with an attached crown, bridge, or denture. The post promotes bone mass growth, preventing the patient from experiencing any problems associated with low bone mass. Most dentists recommend patients choose dental implants for their restorative option.
After the healing period has finished, you will need a second appointment in order for our dentist to obtain impressions of your mouth from different angles using a tool called a CEREC machine. This enables the dentist to create the crown to fit over the implant post. As soon as your mouth has completely healed, the permanent crown made for you is placed on the implant post. Once you have undergone this procedure, you will be able to smile without hesitation and feel completely normal about your teeth again.
Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?
There are only a few requirements for patients who want dental implants. The first being, there is enough bone mass in the jaw to take the implant. Otherwise, the implant will fail. Bone grafts help patients who do not meet the bone mass requirement, this is common in older patients. Patients must also be free of any periodontal or gum diseases. This can also cause an implant to fail. If you have recently had an extraction, the gum must be completely healed before the implant surgery takes place.
Once the dentist gives you the green light, you can schedule your surgery at our dental office in Leesburg. The titanium post is placed along with a temporary crown, bridge or denture. Your gums will take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to heal. Once the healing is complete, you will return to our dentist office and our dentist will take images of your mouth using the CEREC machine to create your permanent crown or bridge, or impressions for your dentures. Once your permanent restoration is made, it will be placed. You can expect your dental implant to feel secure and look completely natural.
Dental Implants Aftercare
Your dental implant should be cared for like the rest of your teeth. You are required to brush twice a day and floss daily in order to protect yourself from periodontal disease. Smoking and lack of dental hygiene can cause your implant to fail. The other way your implant can be harmed is with physical damage to the crown, bridge or denture. This happens during contact sports, clenching or grinding teeth, or just an unlucky fall. It’s important to take preventative action in order to protect your investment. Talk to your dentist if you are prone to nighttime clenching or grinding, or play contact sports so you can be set up with a mouth guard.
Do Dental Implants Hurt?
Dental implants are fixed in the patient’s mouth through screwing and drilling which may scare patients. However, dental implants cause only minimal pain at best, as many of our patients have gone through the process without experiencing any discomfort. Minor bleeding is natural, but all these are after-effects associated with any surgery. After the surgery, you are instructed to use liquid diet and an ice pack for pain relief. Our qualified and experienced doctors make sure that patients feel negligible pain during and after the surgery, so our patients have no cause for worry.
Are Dental Implants Safe?
The myth about the safety of titanium implants is entirely false. Titanium is used due to its chemical property of osseointegration in which it bonds itself with a living tissue. The safety of titanium implants can be seen from the growing use of titanium alloy in dental implant surgeries. The alloy is composed of iron, nickel, lead, copper, and zinc. If you are allergic to any of these metals, only then a dental implant could prove to be harmful to you.
At Cardinal Park Family Dental Care, our dentists take extreme care before implantation. We first make sure that you are not allergic to any used in the implant, so you can rest assured against any complications occurring, and experience the simple joys of smiling, talking, and eating in the perfectly normal way once again.
