Dental Implants FAQs
If you have questions about dental implants, what they are, how they’re performed, and other details, we have answers. We’ve put together these dental implants FAQs to help you.
What Are Dental Implants?
Of all the dental implants FAQs we get, this is the most common. Dental implants are basically titanium surgical posts or screws that are implanted into the jaw where a tooth is missing. After the jaw and gums have healed around the implants, customized crowns are made for them to perfectly imitate natural teeth.
Do Dental Implants Hurt?
Implant dentistry is performed under anesthesia, so the process is painless. After the anesthesia wears off, you may experience some discomfort, but this is usually minor and can be easily managed with nSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin).
How Long Does the Entire Process Take?
When you come to a restorative dentist for dental implants, you will first get the implants put in place. This usually takes about an hour, and then you’ll come back after they have healed and you are ready for your dental crowns. This two-part process generally takes between two and nine months, but may take up to a year. After it’s complete, though, you’ll have a full set of functional and beautiful teeth.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
This is perhaps the second most common of our dental implants FAQs, as patients want to know how long they can expect to have healthy, attractive teeth without further work. With proper care, your dental implants and crowns can last for upwards of 10 or more years.
