Dentures Overview

There are all kinds of problems that can go along with losing your teeth. You will almost certainly be most troubled by the need to forego many of your favorite foods and by the unsightliness of missing teeth. You may also find that your face may appear to sag due to bone loss. Living with missing teeth is simply not an option. One possible solution is dentures.

Having said that, there are other restorative dentistry procedures that can replace missing teeth. The best solution is dental implants, since in every respect, they are the same as your real teeth – they look completely natural, and they feel and work the same as your original teeth. The downside to implants is that they are expensive, and most dental insurers will not cover them. They will, however, usually cover at least part of the cost of dentures.

There are different types of dentures available, including full and partial dentures. As you might gather from the name, a partial denture is created to replace some of your teeth. If you have a few teeth missing in sequence, a partial denture could be preferable. However, if you have many teeth missing, or if your dental health is such that you anticipate losing more teeth in the near future, you may wish to consider having your remaining teeth extracted and full dentures manufactured.

Once your extractions have been done, your dentist will take impressions of your gums to send to a lab where your dentures will be made. In the meantime, you will be provided with temporaries so that you can get used to the way they feel and work, and of course so that you can eat and smile. When your they are ready, your dentist will fit and line them. Sometimes you will need a couple of appointments to get them feeling exactly right. Once they are properly fitted, you should experience no slipping or sliding.
