At Cardinal Park Family Dental, our purpose is to help our patients achieve and maintain a healthy, attractive smile. One of the ways we do that is through preventative dentistry – dental exams and regular cleanings. We also offer tips on how to follow a program of effective oral hygiene, so that our patients can avoid the need for costly dental treatments.

Your first line of defense against tooth decay and gum disease is twice-annual dental checkups, so that any problems can be caught in the early stages. If you are developing a cavity, chances are that you will not notice it until you can feel it with your tongue. With modern imaging techniques, we can actually identify cavities before they are even visible to the naked eye, and correct them before they have a chance to spread to adjacent teeth. We can also identify dental work that is past its “best before” date, along with tiny chips and cracks.

In addition to your dental exams, you should also have a professional cleaning twice a year. Of course we assume that you brush and floss regularly, but no matter how careful you are, you will never be able to get rid of stubborn plaque and tartar. They build up around and under your gum line, and if not removed, can lead to gum disease.  Today, dental hygienists use ultrasound technology as a means of cleaning your teeth, so the procedure is not unpleasant. Of course if you have significant buildup, some manual scaling may be needed, but it can be kept to a minimum.

Now, as to brushing and flossing at home, you might be surprised to know that there is a right way and a wrong way to brush and floss, and a lot of people fail to get it right. Our hygienists will be happy to show you the proper technique, so you can maintain good oral health at home.
