Preventative Dentistry

We focus on preventing oral health problems from occurring before they have an opportunity to affect your smile. To keep your teeth and gums healthy and beautiful, we recommend scheduling a preventive general dentistry appointment every six months. Preventative dentistry is important for maintaining the best health possible in your mouth. This can prevent you from needing expensive and painful treatments in the future. During your preventative dentistry checkup, you will have a complete evaluation of your mouth.

Dental Exams

Receiving dental exams regularly is the most important aspect of preventative dentistry. Your dentist will check your teeth for any signs of decay, chips, cracks or cavities or dental work that needs to be redone. If these issues are caught in the beginning stages, this can prevent you from needing extensive dental work in the future. Your dentist will also check your gums for any signs of periodontal (gum) disease. The dental exam will include your dental cleaning, fluoride treatment, x-rays, sealants and an oral cancer screening.

Professional Cleanings and Checkups

Preventative Dentistry

Regular cleanings and check-up examinations that are performed by a dental professional are an important part of keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Cleanings help keep tartar and plaque from building up on the surfaces of the teeth. We also do a thorough examination so that we have a chance to treat small problems before they develop into bigger problems. If we feel it’s necessary, we might provide a deep cleaning (scaling and planing) if there is excess build up along the gum lines. This will prevent you from developing periodontal disease which can result in more extreme dental problems.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride has been shown to help strengthen teeth, making them more resistant to decay. At Cardinal Park Family Dental Care, our general and family dentistry offerings include tooth-saving fluoride treatments. Fluoride is routine for children’s appointments, but after the child turns 18, insurance usually stops covering fluoride treatments. Fluoride is still recommended for adults as much as it is for children. You will be less likely to experience tooth decay and cavities if you get fluoride treatments.

Sealants

dental sealants

We can also apply sealants to the teeth to further help protect them from decay. Sealants are plastic coatings that are placed on the teeth to create a barrier that prevents decay-causing substances from collecting on them. Sealants are first placed when children receive their first molars. It’s important that children have sealants placed as soon as their pre-molars and molars come in. Your dentist will check your sealants during your preventative appointments and reapply them if necessary. The sealant is applied simply by your dentist by roughing up the teeth and then painting the sealant on. It’s important that brushing and flossing are still apart of your daily routine to maintain your dental health.

Digital X-Rays

Digital X-Rays

X-rays are valuable for diagnosing potential problems in the teeth, gums, and bones which are often not visible to the naked eye. We take your safety to the next level by using digital x-rays, which reduce exposure to radiation by 90 percent. They also produce a high-quality image immediately, eliminating the need to wait for traditional x-rays to develop. At Cardinal Park Family Dental, we use the Galileos Comfort Plus 3D CT Scan which takes a 3D mirror image of the patient. This recent piece of dental technology doesn’t require the patient to keep their mouth stuck open for x-rays. Instead, the camera revolves around the patient’s head to capture a 3D image of their teeth. We also use 2D Panoramic Imaging which takes one panoramic image with only one exposure. We also have Gendex Sensors which helps us take high quality images and upload them to the computer faster than ever.

VELscope oral cancer screening

Oral Cancer Screenings

Usually oral cancer is only considered if you are a smoker, chew tobacco or drink a lot. Unfortunately, oral cancer can happen to anyone, although those habits will increase your risk. Oral cancer is quite common and thanks to technology like the Velscope, dentists are able to detect oral cancer earlier than ever, resulting in less deaths. During your preventative dentistry exam, your dentist will exam your mouth with their naked eye and then complete a thorough exam with the Velscope. If Drs. Ashton or Manrique find anything unusual, they will order a biopsy. This is one of the reasons you should never skip your dental exam, you could have oral cancer and not know it. It’s better to know that you don’t have cancer than to have it and not know.
